What is Quran recitation correction?
Quran recitation correction is practice with a listener. You recite aloud, and your teacher hears every letter, vowel and stop, interrupts you when something is wrong, says it correctly and has you repeat it. The whole lesson is built around your own voice, not around a syllabus of rules.
At Murouj Academy every class is one-to-one, so the time is yours alone and nobody else hears your mistakes. It is for people who can already read the Quran and want their recitation to be correct, fluent and confident.
Recitation correction, Tajweed Classes or Qaida: which one?
The three courses answer three different needs. Pick the one that matches where you are today, and your teacher will confirm it in the free trial class.
| Qaida classes | Tajweed Classes | Quran Recitation Correction | |
|---|---|---|---|
| You are | Not yet able to read Arabic letters | Able to read and ready to study the rules | Able to read and want to recite well |
| The focus | Learning to read, from the first letter | The rules of tajweed, taught in order | Your own recitation, corrected as you recite |
| A class looks like | Step-by-step lessons through the Qaida | Lessons on a rule, then practice of it | You recite; your teacher listens and corrects |
| You leave with | The ability to read the Quran | Knowledge of the rules and how to apply them | Clear, fluent and confident recitation |
Many students combine them over time: the Qaida classes for beginners first, then Tajweed classes for the rules and recitation correction to polish how it all sounds.
Who is this course for?
Adults who read but doubt their recitation
You can read the Quran, but you are not sure how you sound. A private class lets you recite and be corrected without anyone else listening. Men are taught by male teachers.
Women and girls
Sisters and girls are always taught by a female teacher, in a calm one-to-one setting.
Children who can read and need polish
Children who have finished the Qaida and read the Quran recite to their teacher, who corrects them gently and keeps lessons short and encouraging. Parents choose the teacher.
Students who read the Quran in prayer
If you recite surahs in your prayer and want them to be accurate and unhurried, your teacher listens to exactly those surahs and corrects them.
New Muslims who can now read Arabic
Once you can read the letters and words, a patient teacher who explains in English helps your recitation sound natural and clear.
What will you learn?
Your teacher builds a personalized curriculum from the stages below, starting from your level and skipping what you already know.
Stage 1: Listen and find your starting point
- Reciting a short passage so the teacher hears how you read today
- Spotting the patterns in your mistakes, such as letters that sound alike or vowels that are cut short
- Agreeing a personal plan and the surahs or pages you will recite
Stage 2: Correct and refine
- Pronouncing each letter clearly from its correct place
- Holding long vowels and short vowels for their proper length
- Reading doubled letters, ghunnah and the stop marks as they appear in the text
- Repeating a corrected verse until it comes out right on its own
Stage 3: Build fluency and confidence
- Reciting longer passages at a steady, unhurried pace
- Stopping and starting in sensible places
- Reciting without stumbling or looking back at the teacher for reassurance
- Reciting the surahs you use in prayer with confidence
Milestones along the way
- Recite a page from the Quran clearly, with the right sound for each letter
- Hold vowels and lengthened sounds for their proper length
- Stop and start at sensible places in the text
- Recite at a steady pace without hesitating or stumbling
- Feel confident reciting alone, in front of family and in prayer
How fast will you progress?
It depends on the student: your starting point, your age, how many classes you take each week and how much you practice in between. Your teacher sets a personalized plan after the free trial class and reviews it with you as you go, so your milestones fit you rather than a fixed timetable.
What does your teacher listen for?
A teacher listening to your recitation is tracking several things at once, and names them for you so you can hear them too.
| Listening for | The question your teacher asks |
|---|---|
| Letters | Is each letter pronounced from its correct place, and are close letters kept apart? |
| Vowels | Are short and long vowels held for their proper length? |
| Joined sounds | Are doubled letters, nasal sounds and similar details read as the text shows them? |
| Stopping | Do you stop and start in sensible places, and do the stop marks guide you? |
| Flow | Is your pace steady, without hurrying or stumbling? |
Your teacher corrects the patterns that matter most for you first, so every class ends with clear progress on a few things rather than a long list. Our guides to common tajweed mistakes and the manners of reading the Quran are good companions between classes.
How do the classes work?
One-to-one, never in a group
Recitation is heard, not read about. Every class is just you and your teacher, so the whole lesson is spent on your voice and your mistakes.
You recite, your teacher corrects
You recite aloud and your teacher stops you at each mistake, says it correctly, explains why and has you repeat it until it is right.
A personalized plan
Your teacher starts from how you recite today and builds the lessons around the surahs and sounds you need to improve.
You choose your teacher
Try a free class, meet your teacher, and commit only when it feels right. You can try more than one teacher in free trial classes until you find the right fit, then you continue with that teacher.
Times that suit your family
Every class is set at an hour that suits you, in your own time zone, wherever you live across North America, Europe and Australia.
Murouj's own online classroom
Lessons run in Murouj Academy's classroom, with the Madinah Mushaf page synced between you and your teacher and a shared whiteboard. There is no account or app to install.
Lessons are 30, 45 or 60 minutes, 2 to 5 times a week; the packages page explains the options. Most students stay with Murouj Academy for more than a year. For class times in your time zone, see our pages for the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and Australia.

How do one-to-one classes with a native Arab teacher compare?

Frequently asked questions
How is Quran recitation correction different from Tajweed Classes?
Tajweed Classes are rules-focused: your teacher takes you through the articulation points of the letters and the rules in order, from beginner to advanced. In Quran recitation correction you recite and your teacher corrects you live, naming the rule only when it explains your mistake. If you want to study the rules step by step, choose Tajweed Classes. If you can read and want your own recitation to be corrected and polished, choose this course.
How is it different from the Qaida?
The Qaida teaches you to read the Arabic letters and join them into words, so it is for people who cannot read the Quran yet. Recitation correction starts after that: you already read the Quran and now want it to sound correct, fluent and confident.
What happens in a recitation correction class?
You recite a passage aloud. Your teacher listens, stops you at each mistake, models the correct recitation and has you repeat it. By the end of the class you have recited the passage correctly, and your teacher tells you what to practise before the next one.
Do I need to be able to read the Quran already?
Yes, at least slowly and without help. You do not need to be fluent, because building fluency is the point of the course. If you cannot read the Arabic letters yet, start with the Qaida classes for beginners.
Can I choose my teacher?
Yes. You choose your teacher through free trial classes before you commit: try a free class, meet your teacher, and commit only when it feels right. Once you commit, you continue with that teacher, which is how a long-term relationship and a plan built around your recitation work.
Will a woman or girl have a female teacher?
Yes. Women and girls at Murouj Academy are always taught by female teachers. Adult men are taught by male teachers, and for children the parent chooses.
How long does it take to recite fluently?
It depends on where you start, how many classes you take each week and how much you practise between classes. Your teacher hears you recite in the free trial and can tell you where you are starting from, so there is no fixed timeline.
Is the first class free?
Yes. Your first class is a free trial with your teacher, so you can recite for them, see how a correction class works and decide whether to continue.
