Privacy, Safety and Islamic Etiquette in Online Quran Lessons

Murouj Academy teaches the Quran online in live, private, one-to-one lessons, and it follows Islamic etiquette for privacy. Female teachers are dedicated to female students, and when a female teacher teaches a female student, no non-mahram man can see the student. Murouj Academy makes sure of this, and the academy highly respects Islamic rules.

Islamic privacy for female students

This is the rule, in plain words:

  • Female teachers for female students. Women and girls are always taught by female teachers.
  • No non-mahram man can see the student. When a female teacher teaches a female student, no non-mahram man can see her. That includes the teacher's husband and any other man in the teacher's household.
  • Murouj Academy makes sure of this. Murouj Academy follows this rule for every female student.

A mahram is a close male relative with whom marriage is permanently forbidden, such as a father or brother. A non-mahram man is any other man.

If you are looking for a female Quran teacher for yourself, your wife, your mother, your sisters or your daughter, see our page on female Quran teachers online.

Who teaches whom

  • Women and girls are taught by female teachers.
  • Adult men are taught by male teachers.
  • Children: the parent or guardian chooses the teacher from our teacher profiles. Girls are always taught by female teachers, and most children learn with female teachers.

Every Murouj Academy teacher is a native Arabic speaker and teaches live online. Lessons are live on Zoom, Google Meet or Halqora, Murouj's own online classroom software, which lets the teacher and student share the screen, annotate, open the same book and follow along together.

Private, one-to-one lessons

Every lesson is live and one-to-one, with only the student and the teacher. Murouj Academy never runs group classes, so no other student can see or hear your lesson, and there is no audience for a beginner who is shy about reading aloud.

The same teacher, chosen by you

You choose your teacher through free trial classes before you commit. The trial is a real one-to-one lesson with that teacher, so you and your child meet her or him first. Once you commit, you continue with that teacher, and matching is never random. If a teacher becomes unavailable, you can choose another teacher.

What parents and guardians do

Our terms of service set out what families agree to:

  • A parent or guardian books and manages classes for anyone under 18.
  • Parents and guardians are responsible for supervising their child's use of the internet during and around classes.
  • Families do not share class links with anyone else.
  • Classes are not recorded without the academy's and the teacher's permission.
  • Everyone in a class is respectful and courteous, students towards teachers and teachers towards students.
