A private Quran tutor at Murouj Academy is a native Arab teacher who holds an ijazah and teaches you live, one-to-one, with a plan built for you. You choose your tutor from our profiles, take a free trial class with them, and keep them or switch at any time. Women are taught by women, men by men.

One-to-one only: what that changes

In a private lesson, all of the time is yours. Your tutor hears every ayah you recite and corrects it as you go, moves faster where you are confident and slows down where you are not, and answers your questions as they come up. There is no group to keep pace with and no one else listening.

How you choose your private Quran tutor

  1. Read the profiles. Our teachers page lists every tutor with their studies, their ijazah as stated, the subjects they teach and the languages they speak.
  2. Take the free trial with your tutor. Your trial class is a real lesson with the tutor you picked, so you know how they teach before you commit.
  3. Keep or switch. Stay with your tutor for as long as it works. If it doesn't, you can switch to another tutor at any time.

What every Murouj Academy tutor is required to have

  • Native Arabic. Every tutor is a native Arabic speaker from the Arab world. The Quran is in Arabic, so pronunciation, makharij and the Arabic language are taught by native speakers.
  • An ijazah. An ijazah is a formal, chain-based authorisation from a qualified teacher. It certifies that the holder has mastered a body of knowledge, such as reciting the Quran, and may teach it and certify others. A friend who knows the Quran can help you practise; a tutor with an ijazah has been checked and authorised to teach. Learn more in our guide to the types of ijazah.
  • English. Every tutor teaches in English as well as Arabic.

Many of our tutors studied at or are certified by Al-Azhar. Each tutor's profile states their own studies.

Who will teach you

Your personalised curriculum

Your tutor checks your level in the free trial and suggests a plan. It can cover any of Murouj Academy's six courses, in the order that suits you: Quran memorization, recitation and ijazah, Tajweed, the beginners' and New Muslim course, Standard Arabic and Islamic studies. Lessons are supported by PDFs, slides and videos, with regular follow-up.

Lesson lengths and packages

You choose 2 to 5 classes a week, with lessons of 30, 45 or 60 minutes, in four packages: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Fluency. Every package includes a free trial class. Prices are shared on WhatsApp; our packages page lists the options.

The classroom

Lessons run in Murouj Academy's own online classroom. Your tutor selects an ayah or a word on a Madinah Mushaf page and it lights up on your screen; a shared whiteboard is used for letters and rules; and lesson books open page by page in sync. You join from a link, with no account or app to install.
