What time are online Quran classes in the US?

For most of the year, our teachers' clock is 7 hours ahead of Eastern time, 8 hours ahead of Central, 9 hours ahead of Mountain and 10 hours ahead of Pacific. The table below takes the windows US families ask for most and shows what time each one is on the teacher's side.

Your local class windows, shown on our teachers' clock. Where the gap changes with the seasons, January and July are shown separately.

Three things stand out once you see the math:

  1. Weekend mornings are the easiest overlap. A 10 am Saturday class in New York is 5 pm on the teacher's side, and in Los Angeles it is 8 pm, both comfortable hours.
  2. Early mornings before school work well on the East Coast. A 6:30 am class in Eastern time is early afternoon for the teacher, which suits children who are freshest before school.
  3. Weekday afternoons and evenings in the US are late night on the teacher's side. A 5 pm class in Eastern time is midnight for the teacher, and in Pacific time it is 3 am. These slots exist only where a teacher chooses to teach those hours.

Each teacher keeps their own timetable, so we don't print a fixed list of slots here. Tell us the hours that suit your family when you book, and we confirm exact slots with the teacher you choose at your free trial.

What happens when US clocks change?

The United States moves its clocks on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November. Our teachers' time zone changes too, but on different dates: forward on the last Friday in April and back after the last Thursday in October. For a few weeks each year, one side has changed and the other has not, so the gap between you is one hour smaller than usual.

How far our teachers' clock is ahead of or behind yours, Oct 1, 2026 to Dec 31, 2027. Rows marked "clock-change gap" are the weeks when one side has changed its clocks and the other has not. A change that happens in the afternoon or evening your time is listed from the next day.

From Nov 7, 20277 hours ahead8 hours ahead9 hours ahead9 hours ahead10 hours ahead

In practice this means:

  • The spring gap is the long one. From March 14 until April 29, 2027, Eastern time is 6 hours behind our teachers instead of 7. That is about six and a half weeks.
  • The autumn gap is short. It runs from the evening of October 29 to October 31 in 2026, and from the evening of October 28 to November 6 in 2027.
  • Your local time can stay the same. If your son's class is at 9 am every Saturday in Houston, it can stay at 9 am. It simply happens an hour earlier on the teacher's clock during those weeks. Your teacher agrees with you beforehand which clock the class follows, so nobody misses a lesson.

Arizona doesn't change its clocks (the Navajo Nation is the exception), so for Arizona families only our teachers' change matters. The gap is 9 hours from late October to late April and 10 hours from late April to late October.

Hawaii stays on Hawaii time all year, 12 hours behind our teachers in winter and 13 hours behind from late April to late October. Alaska is usually 11 hours behind. Both are possible, mostly on weekend mornings in your time, so message us your hours and we will look for a teacher whose timetable overlaps.

How do Quran classes fit the US school year?

Most US school districts run from late August or early September to late May or June, with a long summer break. One-to-one classes can follow that rhythm:

  • During the school year, the easiest overlaps are an early-morning slot before school or a weekend morning, plus evening slots where a teacher offers them. You can choose from two to five classes a week.
  • Alongside weekend Islamic school. Many US masjids run a weekend or Sunday school. That gives children friends, community and a broad Islamic studies curriculum. A private teacher adds something different: the whole lesson goes to your child's own recitation, memorization or reading level, with mistakes corrected one by one.
  • Summer break is a good time to build momentum, especially for memorization. Ask us on WhatsApp whether your teacher can add classes over the summer.
  • Holidays and travel such as Thanksgiving, winter break or a trip to see family can be planned around: tell your teacher early and agree any changes together.

Because every class is one-to-one, the plan follows the student, not a class calendar. A seven-year-old can start with Arabic letters, while their older sister works on a new juz.

Who will teach my child or me?

Every Murouj Academy teacher is a native Arabic speaker from the Arab world, and every teacher holds an ijazah. We don't hire a teacher without one.

What is an ijazah? An ijazah is a formal, chain-based authorisation from a qualified teacher. It certifies that the holder has mastered a body of knowledge, such as reciting the Quran, and is allowed to teach it and to certify others. A parent or friend who knows the Quran can help a learner, but they are not a certified teacher. You can read more in our guide to the meaning and types of ijazah.

Our teachers speak Arabic and English, so children who grew up speaking English in the US can follow every explanation. Many of our teachers studied at or are certified by Al-Azhar. Each teacher's profile describes their own studies and ijazah, so you can see who you are choosing.

You choose your teacher from our teacher profiles. If the fit isn't right, you can switch at any time. Teacher matching is never random.

Female teachers for women and girls

At Murouj Academy, women and girls are always taught by female teachers. Adult men are taught by male teachers. For children, the parent chooses the teacher, and most of the children we teach learn with female teachers.

This is a fixed rule, not a request we try to meet. It matters to many families, especially mothers who want to learn alongside their daughters, and new Muslim sisters who would rather start with a woman teacher.

Is learning online with Murouj Academy safe?

We would rather be plain about this than make claims we can't back up.

  • Every class is one-to-one, in Murouj Academy's own classroom, opened from a link.
  • Girls and women are always taught by female teachers.
  • For children, the parent chooses the teacher and can switch at any time.

US background checks search US records, and our teachers live and teach outside the United States, so we don't advertise US-style background checks. Our written safeguarding policy is being finalised. When it is ready it will be published on our safeguarding page, and you are welcome to ask us about it on WhatsApp before your trial.

Which course should we choose?

Murouj Academy has six courses, and every one of them is taught one-to-one. US families usually start like this:

Not sure? Book the free trial. Your teacher checks your level in the first class and suggests where to begin.

How does the free trial work?

  1. Book. Use our free trial form or message us on WhatsApp. Tell us your time zone, the student's age and goals, and whether you need a female or male teacher.
  2. Choose your teacher. Look through the teacher profiles and pick one. We confirm a slot that works in your time zone with that teacher.
  3. Take the free class. The trial is a real one-to-one lesson. Your teacher checks the student's level and suggests a plan. If you continue, you choose a package of two to five classes a week, with lessons of 30, 45 or 60 minutes.

How much do online Quran classes cost?

We don't publish prices on this website. Packages differ by the number of classes a week and the lesson length, so ask us on WhatsApp for the price of the package you want. You can see the package options on our packages page, which also lists the payment methods: Wise, PayPal and bank transfer.

Do families stay with Murouj Academy?

Most of our students stay with us for more than a year. Learning the Quran is a long journey, and keeping the same teacher, one you chose yourself, is a big part of why families stay. You can hear from students in their own words on our reviews page.

Frequently asked questions

Which US time zones do you teach in?

Murouj Academy teaches families in Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific time, and in Arizona, which stays on Mountain Standard Time all year. Families in Alaska and Hawaii can study too: tell us your hours on WhatsApp and we will look for a teacher whose timetable overlaps with yours.

What happens to our class time when US clocks change in March and November?

The US changes its clocks on different dates from our teachers' time zone, so for a few weeks each spring and autumn the gap between you is one hour smaller than usual. Your teacher agrees with you beforehand which clock your class follows, so nobody misses a lesson.

We live in Arizona. Does the schedule still work?

Yes. Most of Arizona does not use daylight saving time, so your clock never moves. Our teachers' clock is 9 hours ahead of Arizona from late October to late April and 10 hours ahead from late April to late October, and your teacher adjusts the class on those two dates.

Can my daughter always have a female teacher?

Yes. At Murouj Academy women and girls are always taught by female teachers. For younger children the parent chooses the teacher, and most children learn with female teachers.

Can we choose our teacher and change later?

Yes. You choose your teacher from our teacher profiles, keep them while it is a good fit, and can switch at any time. Teacher matching is never random.

Can online classes work alongside our masjid's weekend Islamic school?

Yes. A weekend program gives your child community and broad Islamic studies; a one-to-one teacher spends the whole lesson on your child's own reading, tajweed or memorization, at the pace they need. Families can use both, with private classes on weekday mornings or weekends.

How do we pay from the United States?

Prices are shared on WhatsApp for the package you choose. Our packages page lists Wise, PayPal and bank transfer as payment methods, and our WhatsApp line is a US number.

Is Murouj Academy a Sunni academy?

Yes. Murouj Academy is a Sunni academy, and its courses are taught for Sunni Muslims.

Do we need to install an app for the classes?

No. Classes run in Murouj Academy's own online classroom, which opens from a link. It has a shared Madinah Mushaf page that follows the teacher and a shared whiteboard, with no account or app to install.

How does the free trial class work?

Book on our free trial page or on WhatsApp, tell us your time zone, goals and preferred teacher, and we confirm a slot with that teacher. The trial is a real one-to-one lesson with your teacher, who checks your level and suggests a plan.
