Yes: an adult in Canada can learn to read the Quran from the first Arabic letter in private one-to-one online classes at Murouj Academy. Women learn with female teachers, men with male teachers, and your first class is a free trial.

What does a beginner's path look like?

You do not need to read any Arabic to start. A typical adult beginner path in Canada runs like this:

  1. The letters and sounds. The Noorani Qaida teaches the Arabic letters, their shapes and their sounds, one step at a time. See Qaida classes for beginners.
  2. Joining letters into words and reading short passages, with the teacher listening and correcting each word.
  3. Reading the Quran with Tajweed, the rules of correct pronunciation. See Tajweed classes.
  4. Recitation correction or memorisation, once reading is steady: Quran recitation correction or short surahs.

Every lesson is live and one-to-one on Zoom, Google Meet or Halqora, Murouj's own online classroom software, where you and the teacher open the same page and follow along together.

Will I feel embarrassed as an adult beginner?

Many adults put this off for years because of embarrassment. A one-to-one lesson removes the audience: Murouj Academy never runs group classes, so nobody hears your first attempts at a letter. Lessons are never recorded, and you can start at a pace set around you.

Who will teach me?

  • Women are always taught by female teachers. Women's privacy is respected on both sides of the screen, and a mother or sister is welcome to sit in.
  • Men are taught by male teachers, who teach boys and men only.
  • Every teacher is a native Arabic speaker, most speak English, and only the top 4% of applicants qualify. Some hold an ijazah.

Murouj matches the teacher for your free trial, and if the fit is not right we switch to another. See our teachers, the female Quran teachers and our safeguarding page.

What time are lessons for working adults in Canada?

Classes are booked in your local time, in every Canadian time zone from Pacific and Mountain through Central and Eastern to Atlantic and Newfoundland time. Our teachers work to US hours, so these usually work well:

Your week What it suits
Weekday evenings After work and after dinner
Weekends Longer lessons without a work deadline
Early mornings Before work, subject to teacher availability

Toronto and Mississauga families can also see the Toronto page, and the Canada page covers every province.

How many lessons a week, and how long is each?

You choose 2 to 5 classes a week of 30, 45 or 60 minutes. Beginners often start with short, frequent lessons so that new letters are revised before they fade. Cancel up to 3 hours before a class (up to 2 a month) and it is made up on another day.

What lesson plans are available for adults in Canada?

The plan is set by lesson length, classes a week and the course, and every plan starts with a free trial class. For pricing, contact us or see the Canada page.

Can an adult learn to read the Quran from zero in Canada?

Yes. Murouj Academy teaches adults who cannot yet read Arabic, starting from the letters with the Noorani Qaida in a private one-to-one class. A patient teacher sets the pace, and the free trial class shows where you are before you commit to anything.

How long does it take an adult beginner to read the Quran?

There is no honest single number. It depends on how many classes a week you take, how much you practise between classes and how quickly the letters and sounds settle. Your teacher sets a plan in the first weeks and reviews it with you.

I am embarrassed to start at my age. Is that normal?

Very. Many adult beginners feel this way. Lessons are one-to-one, so no other student hears you, and the teacher is used to adults who are starting from the first letter. Nobody is behind in a class of one.

Can women in Canada learn with a female teacher?

Yes. Women are always taught by female teachers, in a private one-to-one lesson. Women's privacy is respected on both sides of the screen, and a husband or other non-mahram man must not be on camera or watching during the lesson. Men are taught by male teachers.

What time are lessons for working adults in Canada?

Lessons are booked in your local time in any Canadian time zone, from Pacific to Newfoundland. Our teachers work to US hours, so evenings and weekends are the usual choices for working adults, and early-morning slots are subject to teacher availability.

How many classes a week should an adult beginner take?

Plans run from 2 to 5 one-to-one classes a week, each 30, 45 or 60 minutes. Many beginners start with two or three short lessons so the letters are revised often. You and your teacher can change the plan as your schedule changes.

What do I learn after the Qaida?

Once you can read, most adults move to reading the Quran with Tajweed, then recitation correction or memorisation of short surahs. Arabic can be added too. The teacher suggests the next step when you are ready.

Is the first class free, and what does it cost to continue?

The first class is a free one-to-one trial with a teacher we match to you, with no obligation to buy a package. For pricing on the plan you choose, contact us.
