Starting from zero, without embarrassment
Many adults put off learning the Quran because they worry about reading aloud in front of others. In a Murouj Academy class there is no one else: only you and your teacher, on the same Quran page. Your teacher starts where you are, at your pace, and no question is too basic. Our guide to Arabic alphabet pronunciation is a gentle place to look before your first lesson.
Quran classes for new Muslims and reverts
If you have recently become Muslim, Murouj Academy teaches you one-to-one, patiently, from the very beginning. Because your curriculum is personalised, you and your teacher decide what comes first, such as the Arabic letters, Al-Fatiha or the basics of prayer, and build from there. Murouj Academy is a Sunni academy and teaches plainly, without polemics.
Sisters who have reverted are taught by female teachers, and brothers by male teachers. Our Quran classes for new Muslims course page has the details, and our free guides to the rules of Islam and learning about Islam for beginners are good companions to your lessons.
Women taught by women, men taught by men
At Murouj Academy women are always taught by female teachers, and adult men are taught by male teachers. Within that rule the choice is yours: you choose your teacher from our profiles, take the free trial with them, and keep them or switch at any time. See our female Quran teachers and our male teachers on the teachers page.
Our male Quran teachers

One-to-one classes compared with learning alone
| One-to-one with a Murouj Academy teacher | Videos and apps on your own | |
|---|---|---|
| Someone hears you recite | Every lesson, a teacher who holds an ijazah | No live listener |
| Mistakes corrected | As you make them | You may not notice them |
| Plan | Personalised to your level and goals | General |
| Questions answered | Yes, by your teacher | Search for answers yourself |
Apps and videos are useful for practice between lessons. Correct recitation needs a qualified listener who corrects you.

I can't read Arabic at all. Where do I start?
Start with the Arabic letters and Qaidah in our beginners' and New Muslim course. Once you can join letters into words, you move on to reading the Quran with Tajweed. Your teacher checks your level in the free trial and plans the steps.
Will a woman teach me, or a man?
At Murouj Academy women are always taught by female teachers and adult men are taught by male teachers. Within that, you choose your teacher and can switch at any time.
Do you teach new Muslims and reverts?
Yes. New Muslims and reverts learn one-to-one and patiently, from the very beginning, with a plan built around what matters most to them. Murouj Academy is a Sunni academy and teaches plainly, without polemics.
Can I fit classes around work?
Yes. You choose 2 to 5 classes a week, with lessons of 30, 45 or 60 minutes, and each class is set at an hour that suits your time zone. Tell us your free hours when you book the free trial.

Yes. Every Murouj Academy teacher is a native Arabic speaker from the Arab world and holds an ijazah. All of them teach in English, so you never need Arabic to follow the lesson.
Is it embarrassing to start as an adult beginner?
It doesn't need to be. Your lesson is only you and your teacher, there is no group listening, and the teacher starts from wherever you are. No question is too basic.
