Learn the Quran as a new Muslim sister: the Arabic word بداية (a beginning) above a Qaida book open at the letters alif, ba and ta, under a hanging lantern

Starting from the beginning

Everyone starts somewhere, and for most new sisters the start is the Arabic letters. In your first lessons your teacher shows you each letter, its sound and how it joins to the next, using the Noorani Qaida. You read aloud, she listens and corrects you gently, and you repeat until the sound is right. Our guide to Arabic alphabet pronunciation is a calm place to look before your first lesson.

Many sisters also want the essentials early: Al-Fatihah and the short surahs they say in prayer. Your teacher builds those into your plan alongside the letters, explaining the basics of the prayer in plain English, at the pace you choose.

What your first months can look like

Your plan is personal, so there is no fixed timeline. This is the usual order, and your teacher adjusts it to you.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Answers to what parents and students ask us most.

Ask us on WhatsApp

Who is this page for?

Adult women (18 and over) who are new to Islam and want to learn the Quran: sisters who have recently taken their shahada, and sisters who have been Muslim a while but never learned to read Arabic. Every lesson is with a female teacher, one-to-one.

I cannot read any Arabic. Can I still start?

Yes. You start with the Arabic letters and the Noorani Qaida, one letter at a time, in our Qaida classes for beginners. Your teacher explains in English and begins wherever you are, even the very first letter.

Will my teacher be a woman?

Always. Women and girls at Murouj Academy are taught by female teachers only, in a fully private one-to-one class. That privacy extends to the teacher's husband and any other man in her household.

What will I learn first?

Your teacher plans it with you in the free trial class. Most new sisters start with reading the Arabic letters and, alongside, Al-Fatihah and the short surahs they recite in prayer, with the essentials of the prayer explained simply. You set the pace.

Do I need to know anything about Islam before I start?

No. Your teacher begins with what you already know and explains plainly and patiently. No question is too basic, and nobody else is in the lesson to hear it.

How is my teacher matched?

Murouj matches you with a suitable female teacher for the free trial class. If the fit is not right, Murouj switches you to another female teacher, and this can repeat. Once the fit is right, you continue with that teacher.

Are online Quran classes recorded?

No. Lessons are never recorded, and recording is not allowed. A female admin may join a lesson to observe its quality, and all of Murouj Academy's admins are women.

What happens after I can read?

Most sisters move on to Tajweed classes for correct pronunciation, then Quran recitation correction for fluent, confident recitation. Some go on to memorize, or to learn the Arabic of the Quran. Your teacher suggests the next step when you are ready.

Is the first class free?

Yes. Your first class is a free one-to-one trial with the female teacher Murouj matches to you. She checks your level and suggests a plan, and there is no obligation to buy a package.

Get matched with a teacher

Ready to begin?

Your free trial class is with a teacher Murouj matches to you, and if the fit is not right, Murouj switches to another teacher. Women and girls always learn with female teachers.
