Online Quran Classes in Canada, Coast to Coast

Live one-to-one Quran classes for families across Canada, Pacific to Newfoundland time, with native Arab teachers who all hold an ijazah. Free trial.

From Victoria to St. John's, Canadian families learn the Quran with Murouj Academy in live lessons where it is only the student and the teacher on the call. Our teachers are native Arabs, each one an ijazah holder; girls and women study with a female teacher; and you pick the teacher yourself, with the freedom to change. We book every lesson in your province's local time and start with a free trial class.

The essentials for Canadian families

  • Private lessons, never a group. Each student follows a plan built around them. A lesson runs 30, 45 or 60 minutes, and a week holds between two and five of them.
  • Six time zones covered. Newfoundland, Atlantic, Eastern, Central, Saskatchewan, Mountain and Pacific time all work; Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut are arranged on request.
  • Qualified, Arabic-speaking teachers. All of them grew up speaking Arabic in the Arab world, all of them hold an ijazah, and a good number trained at or were certified by Al-Azhar.
  • A teacher you pick. Matching is your decision, not a lottery, and changing teachers later is always allowed.
  • Sunni teaching. Murouj Academy is a Sunni academy.
  • Who you are dealing with. Messages go to a +1 WhatsApp number, (315) 541-8837, which works like any North American number. The academy belongs to Murouj LLC, a US company registered in Wyoming. There is no Canadian office: everything happens online.

Lesson times across Canada's time zones

Canada's width is the whole story here. Through most of the year our teachers sit 5½ hours ahead of Newfoundland, 6 ahead of Halifax, 7 ahead of Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal, and 8 ahead of Winnipeg. West of Manitoba the distance grows and shifts with the seasons, as the next section explains.

Reading the table from east to west:

  1. Atlantic Canada has the friendliest weekday hours. A 4 pm lesson in St. John's is 9:30 pm for the teacher, and in Halifax 10 pm. The same 4 pm becomes 11 pm from Toronto and the small hours from Vancouver.
  2. Saturday and Sunday mornings work in every province. Ten o'clock on a Saturday in Toronto reaches the teacher at 5 pm; from Vancouver it is 7 pm in winter and 8 pm in summer.
  3. A lesson before the school bus is possible coast to coast. At 6:30 am in Toronto the teacher's clock reads 1:30 pm, and from Calgary or Vancouver that hour is still the teacher's afternoon.

Teachers set their own hours, which is why this page shows the arithmetic rather than a timetable. Share the hours your household can manage when you book, and we confirm exact slots at your free trial with the teacher you picked.

Clock changes, province by province

Canada springs forward on the second Sunday of March and falls back on the first Sunday of November. The zone our teachers live in also observes summer time, on its own calendar: clocks go forward on the final Friday of April and back once the final Thursday of October has passed. Between those dates the two sides are out of step, and the distance between you shrinks by an hour.

Three provinces are different. Saskatchewan never changes its clocks. The official time-zone data behind our tables also shows Alberta and British Columbia settling on summer time all year from the autumn of 2026. In those provinces, our teachers' two changes are the only ones you will notice.

How far our teachers' clock is ahead of or behind yours, Oct 1, 2026 to Dec 31, 2027. Rows marked "clock-change gap" are the weeks when one side has changed its clocks and the other has not. A change that happens in the afternoon or evening your time is listed from the next day.

What that looks like on the calendar:

  • Spring brings the longer mismatch, starting around March Break. Between March 14 and April 29, 2027, Toronto trails our teachers by 6 hours rather than 7, Halifax by 5 rather than 6, and St. John's by 4½ rather than 5½.
  • Autumn brings a brief one. In 2026 it lasts only from the evening of October 29 to October 31; in 2027 it stretches from the evening of October 28 to November 6 wherever clocks still change.
  • Nothing has to move on your side. A Mississauga student with a 9 am Saturday lesson can keep 9 am; during those weeks the teacher simply starts an hour earlier by their own clock. You and the teacher settle in advance which clock the lesson follows.

Yukon stays on one time all year: 9 hours behind our teachers between late October and late April, and 10 hours behind between late April and late October. If you live there or in the Northwest Territories or Nunavut, send us your free hours and we will find a teacher whose day overlaps with yours.

Fitting lessons into a Canadian year

Schools here open in early September and close in late June, with a winter break, a spring break that most provinces call March Break (each province sets its own dates), and the long summer. Private online lessons bend around that calendar:

  • Term time. The easiest overlaps are a slot before school or on a weekend morning; in the Maritimes and Newfoundland, after school is a real option too. Pick anything from two to five lessons a week.
  • Dark winter evenings and snow days. There is no drive and no icy parking lot: the lesson opens from a link in your living room, so a snow day off school leaves the Quran lesson untouched.
  • Hockey, swimming and the rest. From October to spring, practices and tournaments eat into weeknights and weekends. One student, one teacher means a fixed practice night is easy to plan around; give the teacher early notice of tournaments and agree changes together.
  • July and August suit a push on memorisation. Message us on WhatsApp to see whether your teacher can take extra lessons during the summer.

French-speaking and bilingual households

Murouj Academy lessons are taught in Arabic and English. We don't offer lessons in French. Plenty of children in Quebec, New Brunswick and French-immersion programs follow English comfortably, and recitation itself is learned in Arabic, straight from a native speaker. If French is your child's stronger language, say so when you book and we will talk through whether explanations in English will suit them.

Your teacher: native Arab, ijazah holder, your pick

Hiring at Murouj Academy has one firm line: no ijazah, no teaching post. Every teacher holds one, and every teacher is a native Arabic speaker from the Arab world.

An ijazah is a formal, chain-based authorisation from a qualified teacher, certifying that the holder has mastered a body of knowledge such as Quran recitation and may teach it and certify others; a parent or friend who knows the Quran can help, but isn't a certified teacher. Our article on ijazah, its meaning and its types goes deeper.

Teachers explain in English as well as Arabic, and a good number studied at or were certified by Al-Azhar. Read their backgrounds on the teacher profiles page, choose the one who suits you, and change whenever the fit stops working. We never assign teachers at random.

Women and girls are always taught by female teachers, adult men by male teachers; for children the parent chooses, and most children we teach have a female teacher. That holds for every booking, without exception.

New to Canada, or new to Islam?

The first years in a new country rarely leave room for a weekly class across town. A lesson that opens at home slots in around shifts, college and paperwork. Adults starting from scratch, whether newcomers who never had the chance to learn to read the Quran or reverts taking their first steps, can begin from the letters in the New Muslim course. For background reading, try learning about Islam for beginners.

Child safety, without overclaiming

Here is what Murouj Academy can confirm today. Lessons take place one-to-one in the academy's own online classroom, reached by a link. Girls are only ever taught by women. With children, the parent picks the teacher and can replace them at any point.

Canadian police record and vulnerable sector checks cover Canadian records, and our teachers live and teach outside Canada, so we don't advertise Canadian-style checks. A written safeguarding policy is in preparation and will appear on the safeguarding page once finished; ask us about it on WhatsApp any time before the trial.

Picking one of the six courses

All six courses are taught one-to-one, and each one suits a different starting point:

Undecided? The free trial settles it: the teacher hears the student and recommends a starting point.

Booking the free trial, step by step

  1. Get in touch through the trial booking form or on WhatsApp, with your province or time zone, the learner's age and aims, and whether a female or male teacher is needed.
  2. Pick a teacher from the profiles; we line up a time in your zone with them.
  3. Have the lesson. It is a genuine one-to-one class in which the teacher assesses the learner and proposes a plan. Carry on afterwards with two to five lessons a week of 30, 45 or 60 minutes.

Prices and payment

Fees are not listed anywhere on this site. They depend on lessons per week and lesson length, so message us on WhatsApp with the package you have in mind and we will reply with its price. The options, plus the accepted payment methods (Wise, PayPal and bank transfer), sit on the packages page.

Do Canadian families stick with it?

Most of our students stay with us for more than a year. Students describe their experience in their own words on the reviews page.

Frequently asked questions

Do you teach families in Atlantic and Newfoundland time?

Yes. Murouj Academy teaches families in all of Canada's main time zones. Atlantic Canada is 6 hours behind our teachers for most of the year and Newfoundland 5½ hours, which makes Atlantic Canada the easiest part of the country for weekday classes: 4 pm in Halifax is 10 pm on the teacher's side.

We live in Saskatchewan. How do clock changes affect us?

Saskatchewan doesn't change its clocks, so only our teachers' change matters. Our teachers' clock is 8 hours ahead of Regina and Saskatoon from late October to late April, and 9 hours ahead from late April to late October. Your teacher agrees the new time with you before each change.

Can Quran classes fit around school, hockey and swimming?

Yes. Every Murouj Academy class is one-to-one, so the time is set for your child alone. Families often use an early-morning slot before school or a weekend morning, which in Canada falls in our teachers' afternoon or evening, and keep weeknights free for practices.

Do you teach in French?

No. Murouj Academy lessons are taught in Arabic and English. Children from French-speaking homes who also follow English can learn well with us, and the Quran itself is always taught in Arabic by native Arab teachers.

Can my daughter always have a female teacher?

Yes. At Murouj Academy women and girls are always taught by female teachers. Adult men are taught by male teachers, and for children the parent chooses the teacher.

Can we choose our teacher and change later?

Yes. You choose your teacher from our teacher profiles, keep them while it is a good fit, and can switch at any time. Teacher matching is never random.

We are new to Canada. Can adults start from zero?

Yes. Murouj Academy teaches adults who are just starting, including newcomers and new Muslims. Lessons are one-to-one, so a patient teacher starts from the Arabic letters if needed and fits classes around work, study and settling in.

How do we pay from Canada?

Prices are shared on WhatsApp for the package you choose. Our packages page lists Wise, PayPal and bank transfer as payment methods. Murouj Academy is run by Murouj LLC, a US company, and has no Canadian office.

How does the free trial class work?

Book on our free trial page or on WhatsApp, tell us your province or time zone, goals and preferred teacher, and we confirm a slot with that teacher. The trial is a real one-to-one lesson in which your teacher checks your level and suggests a plan.
