The **Day of Judgement in Islam** is the Last Day, when the dead will be resurrected and people will face reckoning before Allah. It is also called the Day of Resurrection. Islamic belief connects this day with reward and punishment, and describes signs that precede it.

## What happens on the Day of Judgement?

The dead rise again for reckoning and recompense before Allah. This belief includes reward in Paradise for believers in Allah's oneness and punishment in Hell, or Jahanam, for disbelief and polytheism.

Resurrection and judgement are closely connected: the dead are raised, then face their reckoning. Understanding this central belief is the starting point before studying the signs of the Hour.

## What are the signs of the Day of Judgement?

The signs of the Hour are events described as preceding the Last Day. The examples below cover the early events and future signs discussed in this guide; they are not a dated sequence.

### Which early signs are mentioned?

The early signs mentioned here include the mission of the Prophet Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, the splitting of the moon and the conquest of Jerusalem. His mission is connected with the Hour because he was the final prophet, while the splitting of the moon is described as an event during his lifetime.

Auf bin Malik Al-Ashja’i – may Allah be pleased with him – is quoted in connection with the campaign of Tabuk:

> I came to the Prophet, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, during the campaign of Tabuk, and he was in a dome of Tanned leather.

Bayt al-Maqdis was conquered during the era of al-Faruq Umar ibn al-Khattab – may Allah be pleased with him – when he went there and built a mosque and reconciled with the people of the region.

### What changes in society and the land are described?

The signs discussed include periods of upheaval and periods of security, alongside changes in the land. These descriptions include:

- **Sedition and upheaval:** disbelief, killing, disobedience and other distressing events. The Prophet Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, warned his community about these trials and directed them to remain with the Muslim community and believe in Allah.
- **The spread of security:** people travelling without fear for themselves, their families or their possessions.
- **The Euphrates revealing a mountain of gold:** people fighting over it.
- **The Arabian Peninsula returning to green meadows.**
- **People gathering in the Levant.**

### Which figures and events are described before the Hour?

Other signs include the appearance of the Mahdi and the Antichrist, the return of Jesus, son of Mary, peace be upon him, and the emergence of Gog and Magog. The descriptions include:

- **The Mahdi:** a ruler who renews the religion and fills the earth with justice after oppression and injustice.
- **The Antichrist:** his emergence before the Hour.
- **The return of Jesus, son of Mary, peace be upon him:** his descent from heaven, killing of the Antichrist, breaking of the cross and rule with justice according to the law of the Prophet Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
- **Gog and Magog:** their emergence before the Hour.
- **An animal speaking to people.**
- **The sun rising from the west.**

## Is the Day of Judgement near?

The mission of the Prophet Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is described as a sign of the Hour's nearness. An explanation attributed to Dr Ali Fakhr of Dar Al Iftaa cites this narration:

> “I have been sent and the Day of Judgement is like this.”

The accompanying description refers to a gesture with the fingers. The quoted wording expresses nearness without giving a calendar date, so it does not provide a timetable for the signs.
