**"Al-Azhar certified" usually means a teacher graduated from Al-Azhar University, finished school in Al-Azhar's education system, or studied under its scholars.** It is a strong sign of formal Islamic education, but it is not the same as an ijazah in Quran recitation. The best teachers often hold both, so ask which qualification is meant.

You will see the phrase on many teacher profiles, and families in the US, UK, Canada and Australia often ask what it actually tells them. This guide explains what Al-Azhar is, the different things "Al-Azhar certified" can describe, and how to check the claim politely.

## What is Al-Azhar?

Al-Azhar is a mosque and centre of learning in Cairo, founded in the 10th century CE, around 970 to 972. It is one of the oldest continuously operating institutions of learning in the world. Today it is a major Sunni institution, with a university and a network of Azhari schools, often called Azhari institutes, in which Quran memorisation is part of the curriculum.

Over the centuries, students have travelled to Al-Azhar from across the Muslim world to study the Quran, Arabic, fiqh, hadith and other sciences. That long history is why the name carries weight with families looking for a Quran teacher.

## What can "Al-Azhar certified" mean?

The phrase is used loosely. It can describe at least four different things:

| What the teacher has | What it usually involves | What it tells you |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A degree from Al-Azhar University | Years of university study in a faculty such as Islamic studies, Arabic or Quranic sciences | Formal academic training in Islamic subjects |
| A diploma from an Azhari school | Primary and secondary schooling in Al-Azhar's system, where Quran memorisation is part of the curriculum | An Islamic education from childhood, often with substantial memorisation |
| Study with Azhari scholars or institutes | Courses or classes with teachers in the Azhar tradition, including in Quran recitation | Learning within a respected tradition; the details vary |
| An ijazah from a teacher in the Azhar tradition | Reciting the Quran to a qualified teacher who grants permission with a sanad | Authorisation to teach and transmit recitation |

All of these are valuable. But they answer different questions, and the label alone does not tell you which one a teacher holds.

## Is Al-Azhar certification the same as an ijazah?

Not necessarily. An ijazah is a formal, chain-based authorisation from a qualified teacher. It certifies that the holder has mastered a body of knowledge, such as reciting the Quran in a particular riwayah, and may teach it and certify others. It is granted by a named person, with a chain of teachers (the sanad) going back to the Prophet ﷺ.

A university degree or school diploma, on the other hand, is granted by an institution and shows a course of study. Someone can graduate from an Azhari programme without holding a recitation ijazah, and someone can hold a strong ijazah without having studied at Al-Azhar.

That is why many families ask about both. Our guide to [the difference between an ijazah and a certificate](https://muroujacademy.com/ijazah-vs-certificate/) explains the distinction in detail, and [the meaning and types of ijazah](https://muroujacademy.com/types-of-ijazah/) covers the kinds of ijazah you will come across.

## Why do families look for Al-Azhar-educated teachers?

There are good reasons:

- **Depth of study.** Azhari education covers the Quran alongside Arabic grammar, Tajweed and Islamic sciences.
- **A recognised Sunni institution.** For families who want mainstream Sunni teaching, Al-Azhar is a familiar reference point.
- **Arabic fluency.** Teachers educated in this tradition study the Quran in its own language.
- **Memorisation.** Many Azhari students memorise large portions of the Quran during their schooling.

None of this replaces the need to meet the teacher. A qualification tells you about training; a trial class tells you about teaching.

## How do you check an Al-Azhar claim?

You do not need to be suspicious to ask. Teachers with real qualifications are usually happy to explain them. Ask:

1. **Which qualification do you mean?** A university degree, an Azhari school diploma, a course, or an ijazah?
2. **In what subject or faculty?** For example, Quranic studies, Islamic studies or Arabic.
3. **Do you also hold an ijazah in Quran recitation?** If yes, from whom and in which riwayah? Our guide to [Hafs 'an 'Asim](https://muroujacademy.com/what-is-hafs-an-asim/) explains the riwayah names you may hear.
4. **Can I see the document or the sanad?** A brief look is enough.

Then judge the teaching itself in a trial lesson: is the recitation clear, are corrections patient and precise, and does the teacher adapt to the student? Our checklist on [how to choose an online Quran teacher](https://muroujacademy.com/how-to-choose-an-online-quran-teacher/) has a list of trial-class questions you can use.

## What should you not assume?

A few cautions, offered fairly:

- **"Al-Azhar" on a profile does not say which qualification it is.** Ask.
- **Not every excellent teacher studied at Al-Azhar.** Many qualified reciters hold ijazahs from scholars elsewhere in the Arab world and beyond.
- **A famous institution does not guarantee a good fit.** A teacher's patience with children, or their experience with adult beginners, matters just as much.

The Quran reminds us that "the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you" ([Quran 49:13](https://quran.com/49/13)). Credentials help us choose wisely, but character and sincerity in teaching are what students remember.

## How does Murouj Academy describe its teachers?

Murouj Academy uses careful wording on purpose:

- **Every Murouj Academy teacher holds an ijazah.** The academy does not hire a teacher without one.
- **Every teacher is a native Arab**, a native Arabic speaker from the Arab world.
- **Many of our teachers studied at or are certified by Al-Azhar.** Not all of them, so we do not claim it for every teacher.
- **Each profile on [our teachers page](https://muroujacademy.com/teachers/) describes that teacher's own ijazah and studies**, including Al-Azhar only where it applies.

Classes are one-to-one and live, with a personalised curriculum. Students and parents choose their teacher, can keep them if it is a good fit, or switch at any time. Women and girls are taught by female teachers.

## Can you study with an ijazah-holding teacher online?

## Frequently asked questions

### What is Al-Azhar?

Al-Azhar is a mosque and centre of learning in Cairo, founded in the 10th century CE. Today it is a major Sunni institution with a university and a network of Azhari schools.

### Does Al-Azhar issue ijazahs in Quran recitation?

Ijazahs are granted by individual teachers who hold them, and many teachers in the Azhar tradition grant them. A degree or diploma from Al-Azhar is a separate academic qualification.

### Is an Al-Azhar degree better than an ijazah?

They are different, not competing. A degree shows formal academic study; an ijazah shows that a qualified reciter heard your recitation and authorised you to teach it. For a Quran recitation teacher, the ijazah is the key qualification.

### Are all Murouj Academy teachers from Al-Azhar?

No. Many Murouj Academy teachers studied at or are certified by Al-Azhar, and every teacher holds an ijazah. Each teacher's profile states their own studies.

### How can I check a teacher's Al-Azhar qualification?

Ask which qualification they mean, in which subject, and whether they also hold an ijazah. A genuine teacher can usually show the document or explain their sanad.
