Dream interpretation in Islam is permissible for someone familiar with it, but it is not obligatory. Dreams may be true dreams from Allah, distressing dreams from Satan, or reflections of waking thoughts. This guide explains these types and why dreams should not determine serious decisions in your life.

## What are the types of dreams in Islam?

Dreams are described as three types: true dreams, distressing dreams and dreams that reflect waking thoughts. This distinction helps explain why not everything seen during sleep should be treated as a message to interpret.

| Type | Description |
| --- | --- |
| True dreams or visions | Dreams from Allah |
| Distressing dreams | Dreams involving Satan's attempts to cause grief |
| Waking thoughts | Images or situations that occupied the mind while awake, such as a wish |

The Prophet – may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him – said:

> “There are three dreams, including horrors from Satan, so that the son of Adam will grieve with them, and among them is what a man wanders about in his wakefulness, and he sees it in his sleep, and among them is part of the forty-six parts of prophecy)).

It was narrated by [Ibn Majah](https://sunnah.com/ibnmajah). The distinction between true dreams and distressing dreams also appears in the report cited according to al-Bukhari:

> ((The true dream is from Allah, and the dream is from Satan)).

## Who may interpret dreams in Islam?

Dream interpretation is permissible for those familiar with it, but an interpretation can be mistaken. The Prophet, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, sometimes interpreted dreams and sometimes left them uninterpreted.

The account involving Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, describes permission to interpret a dream:

> He had a vision, so Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, asked to cross it, so the Prophet, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, permitted him.
>
> Then Abu Bakr, said: May my father be sacrificed for you, are you right or wrong? The Prophet said: I was right in some and I was wrong in some. He said: By Allah, O Messenger of Allah; To speak to me of what I did wrong, he said: Do not swear.

The account of Abdullah bin Omar, may Allah be pleased with them both, also connects a dream with the Prophet’s guidance:

> On the authority of Abdullah bin Omar, may Allah be pleased with them both, that he saw in a dream as if two angels took him to hell! He says -: If it was folded like a well, and if it had two horns, and if there were people in it that I had known, then I started saying: I seek refuge in God from Jahanam. Allah may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, and he said: Yes, the man worshiped Allah, if he used to pray from the night, and after that, he would not sleep from the night except a little. agreed.

These accounts are a reason to approach interpretation carefully, rather than assuming that every explanation is certain.

## How should you respond to a good or bad dream?

Be glad of a good dream, and try not to panic over a distressing one. Do not treat dreams as omens of good or bad luck, or rely on them to make serious life decisions.

A dream can feel significant without giving you a dependable basis for deciding what to do. The distinction between true dreams, distressing dreams and waking thoughts matters when considering what you have seen.

## Can a dream dictionary explain your dream?

A dream dictionary offers interpretations of symbols, but it should not be treated as a certain explanation of your dream. Reading a meaning in a book is no reason to let it determine a serious decision.

The same caution applies when someone offers an interpretation: familiarity with dream meanings does not make every interpretation correct. Avoid treating a proposed meaning as a prediction of your future.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does every dream need an interpretation?

No. Dream interpretation is not obligatory, and some dreams reflect thoughts or situations from waking life.

### Can an upsetting dream reflect everyday thoughts?

Yes. What occupies the mind while awake can appear during sleep, so an upsetting dream should not automatically be treated as a prediction.

### Is an interpretation always correct?

No. The account involving Abu Bakr describes an interpretation as partly right and partly wrong, so an explanation should not be treated as certain simply because someone offers it.
