**One-to-one Quran classes are usually better for accurate recitation and steady progress, because the teacher hears and corrects every line the student reads.** Group classes are better for community, friendship and learning alongside others. Many families use both: one-to-one lessons for reading, Tajweed and hifz, and a local group for belonging.

Neither format is "right" for everyone. This guide compares them honestly so you can decide what fits your child, or you, at this stage.

## What is the main difference between one-to-one and group Quran classes?

The biggest difference is **listening time**. Learning to recite the Quran is a skill of the tongue and the ear: the student reads, the teacher listens, and the teacher corrects. In a one-to-one class, the whole lesson is spent on one student's recitation. In a group, that time is shared.

Imagine a 45-minute lesson. One-to-one, the student may recite for most of it. In a group of six, even with a skilled teacher, each student recites for a fraction of that time, and spends the rest listening to others. Listening has value, but correction is where most progress happens.

The Prophet ﷺ himself taught the Quran by personal recitation. Abdullah ibn Mas'ud said, "By Allah, I learnt over seventy Suras direct from Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)" ([Sahih al-Bukhari 5000](https://sunnah.com/bukhari:5000)). The tradition of reciting to a teacher, one by one, runs through the whole history of Quran teaching.

## How do the two formats compare?

| | One-to-one classes | Group classes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Recitation and correction time | The whole lesson, for one student | Shared among the group |
| Pace | Set by the student | Set by the group's average |
| Curriculum | Personalised to the student's level and goals | Usually a common syllabus |
| Scheduling | Arranged around one student or family | Fixed times for everyone |
| Mistakes noticed | Almost all, as they happen | Some may pass unnoticed |
| Shy students | Often more comfortable reciting | May hold back in front of others |
| Community and friendship | Limited to the teacher relationship | Strong; students learn together |
| Motivation from peers | Low | High, especially for children |
| Fit for mixed levels | Excellent | Harder when levels differ widely |

## When are one-to-one classes the better choice?

One-to-one lessons tend to suit:

- **Beginners learning to read.** Letters and makharij need constant, immediate correction. Our guide to [makharij al-huruf](https://muroujacademy.com/makharij-al-huruf/) shows how detailed this is.
- **Hifz students.** Memorization needs a teacher to hear the new portion and the revision every class.
- **Adults and new Muslims.** Many adults prefer to make early mistakes privately, at their own pace.
- **Students working towards an ijazah,** which is earned by reciting the whole Quran to a teacher.
- **Busy families,** because the class can be set at a time that suits one household rather than a whole group.
- **Children who are shy, or who need a calm, focused setting.**

## When are group classes the better choice?

Group classes have real strengths, and they are an important part of many communities:

- **Belonging.** Children who learn at the mosque with friends often feel part of something bigger.
- **Peer motivation.** Hearing a friend recite a new surah can be the push a child needs.
- **Islamic studies and stories.** Topics like seerah and manners can work well in a lively group.
- **Community links.** A local class connects families with the imam and other parents.

If your local mosque runs a good class, it can be a wonderful complement to one-to-one study. The two are not rivals.

## Do children learn better one-to-one or in a group?

It depends on the child and the goal. For reading accuracy, Tajweed and memorization, most children progress faster with a teacher who listens only to them. For confidence, friendship and a love of the mosque, a group gives something one-to-one cannot.

A practical approach many parents use:

1. **One-to-one lessons** for reading, Tajweed or hifz, two to five times a week.
2. **A weekend group** at the mosque or Islamic school for community and Islamic studies.
3. **A short daily practice at home,** which matters more than either. See our guide on [helping your child learn Quran at home](https://muroujacademy.com/how-to-help-your-child-learn-quran-at-home/).

## What should you check before choosing either format?

Whatever you choose, the quality of the teacher matters more than the format. Before you commit, check:

- **The teacher's ijazah,** and who granted it.
- **How mistakes are corrected,** and how often each student recites.
- **For groups: the size of the class and the range of levels in it.**
- **For one-to-one: whether you can choose the teacher and switch if it is not a good fit.**
- **Whether there is a trial class with the actual teacher.**

Our checklist on [how to choose an online Quran teacher](https://muroujacademy.com/how-to-choose-an-online-quran-teacher/) goes through these in detail. If you are also weighing location, read [online vs in-person Quran classes](https://muroujacademy.com/online-vs-in-person-quran-classes/).

## Are one-to-one online classes as personal as in-person ones?

They can be. In a live one-to-one online class, the teacher and student see the same page and hear each other clearly, and nothing competes for the teacher's attention. For many families, especially those without a qualified teacher nearby, it is the most practical way to get one-to-one time with a teacher who holds an ijazah. Our article on [online Quran classes for beginners](https://muroujacademy.com/online-quran-classes-for-beginners/) describes how they work.

## Why does Murouj Academy teach one-to-one only?

Murouj Academy never runs group classes. Every class is one-to-one and live, and each student follows a personalised curriculum. That choice reflects how the Quran has always been taught: a student reciting, a teacher listening and correcting.

What that looks like in practice:

- **Every Murouj Academy teacher holds an ijazah** and is a native Arab, a native Arabic speaker from the Arab world.
- **You choose your teacher,** keep them if it is a good fit, or switch at any time. Matching is never random.
- **Women and girls are taught by female teachers;** adult men by male teachers. For children, parents choose.
- **Lessons are 30, 45 or 60 minutes,** two to five times a week, at an hour that suits your time zone.
- **A shared Madinah Mushaf page** follows the teacher in Murouj Academy's own classroom, so the student always sees exactly where to read.

Most students stay with Murouj Academy for more than a year, which says something about the value of a steady, personal teacher.

## Frequently asked questions

### Are one-to-one Quran classes better than group classes?

For recitation accuracy, Tajweed and memorization, one-to-one classes usually lead to faster progress because the teacher corrects every line. Group classes are better for community and peer motivation.

### How many students are too many for a Quran reading class?

There is no fixed rule, but the larger the group, the less each student recites. For beginners learning letters and makharij, smaller is clearly better.

### Can my child do both one-to-one and group classes?

Yes. Many families pair one-to-one lessons for reading or hifz with a weekend group at the mosque for community and Islamic studies.

### Does Murouj Academy offer group classes?

No. Murouj Academy teaches one-to-one only, with a personalised curriculum for each student.

### Are one-to-one classes good for adults?

Yes. Many adults and new Muslims prefer to learn privately at their own pace, and one-to-one lessons let them start exactly where they are.
