To choose a safe online Quran teacher for your daughter, **ask any academy nine questions and get the answers in plain words**: Are lessons recorded? Who else can see the screen? Can I sit in? Who covers when the teacher is away, and is it always a woman? How are teachers vetted? Is there a trial, and can we switch? A good academy answers every one of them without hesitation.

This guide is a checklist for parents, not a ranking. It works for any academy or independent teacher. Each question comes with why it matters and what a good answer sounds like. At the end you can see how Murouj Academy answers the same nine questions, so you can hold us to them.

## What should I ask before my daughter's first online Quran lesson?

Print this list and keep it beside you when you speak to an academy.

1. Are the lessons recorded?
2. Who else can see or hear the lesson?
3. Will my daughter always be taught by a woman?
4. Can I sit in on the lessons?
5. Who covers when the teacher is away, and is it always a woman?
6. How are teachers selected and vetted?
7. Is there a trial, and can we change teacher if the fit is wrong?
8. How do lessons run, and who controls the link?
9. Who do I talk to if something worries me?

## 1. Are lessons recorded?

**Why it matters:** a recording is a video of your daughter that exists after the lesson ends. It can be stored, shared or leaked, and you may never know where it goes.

**A good answer sounds like:** "No. Lessons are never recorded, and recording is not allowed for anyone." Be wary of "only for quality" or "only sometimes" unless you can say yes or no to it. If a teacher or academy does record, ask who sees the recording, how long it is kept and whether you can refuse.

## 2. Who else can see or hear the lesson?

**Why it matters:** privacy on a video call runs both ways. On the teacher's side, another person in her home may walk through the room. On your side, a relative may sit in view. Some academies also run group classes where other students and their families can see your daughter. Women on both sides of the screen are entitled to privacy.

**A good answer sounds like:** "Lessons are one-to-one, and women's privacy is respected on both sides of the screen: the teacher's husband and other non-mahram men are not on camera, and we ask the family to do the same for the teacher." Ask whether this is a rule the academy checks or something it hopes for. Also ask whether staff can join a lesson, and if so who they are. A mahram is a close male relative with whom marriage is permanently forbidden, such as a father or brother. A non-mahram man is any other man.

## 3. Will my daughter always be taught by a woman?

**Why it matters:** many families, and many scholars, prefer a female teacher for girls. Our article on [whether a woman can learn Quran from a male teacher](https://muroujacademy.com/can-women-learn-quran-from-a-male-teacher/) explains the scholarly view. "Usually" is not the same as "always".

**A good answer sounds like:** "Girls are taught only by female teachers. Male teachers do not teach girls." Ask what happens if no female teacher is free at your time. The answer should be a different time, never a male teacher.

## 4. Can I sit in on the lessons?

**Why it matters:** the simplest safeguard is being in the room. A young child or a shy teenager may also recite more confidently with her mother beside her.

**A good answer sounds like:** "Yes, you are welcome to stay." Ask about the rules for who may sit in. When the teacher is a woman, it is reasonable for the room to be women only, out of respect for her privacy as well as your daughter's. A mother or sister is welcome, and fathers can usually talk to the academy directly instead. If the academy discourages all parents from sitting in, ask why.

## 5. Who covers when the teacher is away, and is it always a woman?

**Why it matters:** substitutes are where good promises most often fail. A teacher falls ill, a lesson is at risk, and the academy hands your daughter to whoever is free.

**A good answer sounds like:** "Either the lesson is made up on another day, or a temporary substitute covers. A girl's substitute is always a woman." Ask whether a missed class is lost or made up, and whether your daughter returns to her own teacher afterwards.

## 6. How are teachers selected and vetted?

**Why it matters:** you are trusting someone with your child's Quran and her time. Being able to recite well is not the same as being able to teach a child.

**A good answer sounds like:** a clear list of steps, such as a recitation check, a Tajweed knowledge check, a check of teaching experience, a check of English fluency if your family needs it, and a trial lesson. Ask how many applicants are accepted, whether teachers must have taught before and whether they hold an ijazah. An ijazah is a formal, chain-based authorisation to teach and certify, so ask who granted it. Do not accept "all our teachers are certified" without detail. Ask also whether background checks are done, and listen for an honest answer rather than a vague one. Our guide on [how to choose an online Quran teacher](https://muroujacademy.com/how-to-choose-an-online-quran-teacher/) covers teacher-level checks in more depth.

## 7. Is there a trial, and can we change teacher if the fit is wrong?

**Why it matters:** a child may not click with a teacher who is perfectly qualified. You should find that out before you commit, not after.

**A good answer sounds like:** "Yes, there is a trial lesson with the teacher who would teach her, and if the fit is wrong we will arrange another teacher." Ask whether the trial teacher is the same person who would teach her every week, and whether you must buy a package first.

## 8. How do lessons run, and who controls the link?

**Why it matters:** a class link that is shared widely can let uninvited people join. A platform with no clear rules may also let people join with their cameras on.

**A good answer sounds like:** "Lessons are live, one-to-one, on a platform such as Zoom, Google Meet or the academy's own classroom, and each family gets its own link which is not to be shared." Ask what platform is used, whether your daughter can use a phone, tablet or computer, and what time zone the lessons follow.

## 9. Who do I talk to if something worries me?

**Why it matters:** a concern about a lesson needs a person who answers, not a form that disappears.

**A good answer sounds like:** a named channel, such as a family WhatsApp group or a phone number, and a team that responds and acts. Ask what happens after you raise a concern, and whether the academy will pause or end lessons if rules are broken. Also ask how you will hear about your daughter's progress, for example a short written report after each class.

## What are the red flags?

These are not accusations against anyone. They are signs to ask more questions before you commit.

- Lessons are recorded, and the answer about who can watch them is vague.
- Group classes where your daughter's camera is visible to other families.
- The academy cannot say who covers a missed lesson.
- A male teacher "for older girls" or "just this once".
- No clear rule about who may be on camera on the family's side.
- You are not allowed to sit in, or you are asked not to.
- No trial class, or pressure to pay for a long block first.
- No written terms for missed classes and cancellations.

## How does Murouj Academy answer these nine questions?

We wrote this checklist to be fair to every academy. Here is how Murouj Academy answers, using only what the academy has confirmed.

| Question | Murouj Academy |
| --- | --- |
| Recorded? | Never. Lessons are never recorded, and recording is not allowed. |
| Who can see? | One-to-one lessons only. Women's privacy is respected on both sides of the screen: a non-mahram man, including the teacher's husband, is not on camera with a girl student, and the family keeps non-mahram men off camera on their side too while a female teacher teaches. Female admins may join to observe quality. |
| Always a woman? | Yes. Girls are taught only by female teachers. |
| Can I sit in? | Yes. Mothers and sisters may sit in. Fathers are welcome to talk to us or our admin team, but not to sit on camera with a female teacher. |
| Absences? | The lesson is made up, or a temporary substitute covers. A girl's substitute is a woman. |
| Vetting? | An ijazah and recitation check, a Tajweed knowledge check, a teaching skills check, an English fluency check and a mock lesson. Only the top 4% of applicants qualify. |
| Trial? | A free trial class with a teacher Murouj matches to your family. If the fit is wrong, Murouj switches to another teacher. |
| Platform? | Zoom, Google Meet or Halqora, Murouj's own online classroom. Families do not share class links. |
| Concerns? | Each family has its own WhatsApp group with the admin team, and you can message us on WhatsApp or email. |

## Frequently asked questions

### Is it safe for my daughter to learn the Quran online?

It can be, if the academy answers the questions in this guide clearly. One-to-one lessons, a female teacher, no recordings, a parent welcome to sit in and a clear plan for absences cover most of what parents worry about.

### Should a girl be taught by a female teacher?

Many families and scholars prefer it, especially for long one-to-one study. If it matters to you, ask whether it is guaranteed for every lesson, including when a substitute covers.

### Can my daughter's lessons be recorded without my knowledge?

You should be told in writing whether lessons are ever recorded. A good academy says plainly that recording is not allowed, and tells you who may join a lesson, such as staff observing quality.

### Should I sit in on my daughter's Quran lessons?

You do not have to, but you should be allowed to. Many parents sit in for the first lessons, especially with a young child, and it gives you a clear picture of how the teacher works.

### What age can a girl start online Quran lessons?

It depends on the academy. At Murouj Academy the minimum age is 4, and a 4-year-old usually starts with the Arabic letters in short, friendly lessons. Readiness matters more than the birthday, so ask for a trial.
