Halal Eid activities include a family breakfast, decorating together, making sweets, a trip to a park or beach, and a private gathering where women and girls can dress up. Let children help with preparations and enjoy time to play, while keeping the celebration within Islamic boundaries.

## How can families celebrate Eid together?

Choose activities that allow adults to enjoy the day and give children room to join in and play. Eid does not make otherwise forbidden activities permissible, so keep the usual Islamic boundaries in place when planning entertainment.

### Share breakfast with relatives

A family breakfast is an opportunity to reconnect with relatives and help children get to know each other. Make room for conversation, shared food and play so that the gathering is enjoyable for different ages.

Provide a suitable environment for children rather than expecting them to sit quietly throughout the visit. Giving them space to play helps make the gathering welcoming, while adults can enjoy spending time together too.

### Decorate the home together

Involve the family in preparing the home for Eid. Balloons, fabric ribbons with Eid greetings and lights for the garden or porch are among the decorations you can arrange together.

Children can help inflate balloons, arrange decorations and decide where they should go. For Eid al-Adha, sheep or cow toys can be included in their rooms or among the books on a shelf.

### Prepare Eid sweets as a family

Choose a recipe for sweets your family associates with Eid and prepare it together. Looking through recipes, discussing ingredients and sharing the finished dessert all give family members a way to take part.

Let children join in the preparations as well as the eating. The anticipation of seeing how the recipe turns out can be part of the enjoyment.

### Visit a beach, park or nearby town

An outing offers a change of scene and time to enjoy nature together. A public park, beach or nearby town can be the setting for a family visit during the holiday.

Choose an outing that fits around the family's work and study commitments. The focus is on enjoying time together in a place you would like to explore.

### Arrange a private gathering for women and girls

A private gathering at home gives women and girls time to enjoy clothes, makeup and perfume together. Keep the gathering within the modesty boundaries described here: observe the boundary of awrah between women, from the navel to the knee, and maintain proper hijab outside and in front of non-mahram men.

This can also help girls understand the distinction between enjoying adornment privately and observing the conditions of hijab. Make the gathering an enjoyable part of the family's Eid plans.

## How do the day's Sunnahs fit into your plans?

Make room for the day's Sunnahs alongside meals, play and outings. The following account describes preparations for Eid and the practice of eating dates before going out on Eid al-Fitr:

> Ibn al-Qayyim said: And he, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, used to wear his most beautiful clothes for them (i.e., for the two Eids), and he had a suit that he wore for the two Eids and Fridays. And Ibn Omar, may God be pleased with them both, used to take a bath for the two Eids, and Ibn Omar was one of the most scrupulous people in the Sunnah of the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, and he, peace be upon him, did not go out on the day of Fitr until he had eaten, and he did not feed on the day of sacrifice until he had been slaughtered, and he also used to eat before going out to the prayer place in Eid al-Fitr is dates, as Anas, may God be pleased with him, said: The Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, did not set out on the day of Eid al-Fitr until he had eaten dates and ate them oddly, i.e. one, three, five, or seven.
